I grew up in England and attended the University of Nottingham where I earned a bachelor’s degree in American Studies with International Study. I then moved to Charleston and graduated from the College of Charleston with a master’s degree in elementary education after completing my clinical practice at St. Andrew’s School of Math and Science. While at the college, I was awarded two scholarships for academic excellence, as well as receiving the outstanding student award for my graduating class.
One of the first experiences that told me I wanted to pursue a career in education came when I was teaching English in a public elementary school in Guadalajara, Mexico. I was put in front of groups of children who spoke no English and, with only a few supplies, was told to teach them some basics of the English language. In many ways this early experience formed much of my current teaching philosophy; be enthusiastic; don’t be afraid to take risks; set high standards for students; use tools such as manipulatives, songs, and pictures to engage students; be firm but fair, and always believe that every child can learn.
After this formative experience, I went on to volunteer and work with a number of organizations including the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, Earth Force and Communities in Schools at Mitchell Elementary, Shannon’s Hope camp for bereaved children, and a youth soccer team on James Island. I have been commended for my ability to work well in a team, communicate with diverse groups of people, and work patiently with the most challenging students.
I am passionate about working with children and am committed to providing a high-quality education to every student. I believe that the root of a successful education is developing literacy at an early age through consistent exposure to books, and fostering a life-long appreciation for the written and spoken word.
